iorram

The acclaimed original Iorram soundtrack.

Iorram (Boat Song) is the first cinematic documentary made entirely in the Gaelic language. Unflinching, unromanticised, the film is a portrait of modern fishing communities in the Outer Hebrides charting the toil and loss of an industry which used to thrive on islands once rich with Gaelic culture.

At the heart of soundtrack are archive Gaelic voices recorded in the 1950s and 1960s. The voices are gritty, witty, lyrical, innately musical; around them O’Rourke weaves his stripped-back, magnetic new music scored for an ensemble of international folk, jazz and contemporary classical luminaries.

‘a feast for the ears’ – The Guardian
‘a hypnotically understated score’ – The Radio Times

Best of 365

James Robertson wrote a short story every day for a year. A roaming collection of tales, memories, provocations. Aidan wrote a tune every day in response. The result is 365 stories and 365 tunes. This double album presents the highlights.

With Kit Downes (piano/harmonium), Esther Swift (harp) and Sorren Maclean (guitar).

I am even more amazed, and deeply impressed, by the beauty and variety of these recordings by Aidan and Kit. It has been a joy working with them in live performance.”

Lau - Folk Songs EP_discog.jpg

Lau - Folk Songs

Lau does traditional song.

For 15 years, Lau had been writing new music in the language and spirit of traditional song and dance. Their instinct had always been to keep pushing forward, keep testing what elements can be woven around the old idioms to make them new and keep them true. This is their first real foray into the traditional canon proper.

Lau - Midnight and Closedown

The closing track, 'Riad', brings the band full circle, stripping the lineup back to bare acoustic instruments.

Says John Parish: "Lau. Cool band. Don't sound like anybody else. I could describe the instrumentation: treated fiddle, guitar and rich baritone voice, an electronic ship in a bottle. A beautiful set of songs and instrumentals. In touch with their roots but not bound by them".
